The Tragedy at Sandy Hook

In light of the Sandy Hook shootings, I am amazed how the community has blamed this tragedy on the "godless".

This angers me!  This is wrong!  To blame our society's problems on the "godless"!  First of all, religious people DO ALL SORTS OF EVIL THINGS ALL THE TIME!  Secondly, the godless of this nation are an overwhelming minority.  Only about 5 percent of the population claims to have no god in their life.  Are you honestly telling me that god allows 20 innocent children to be slaughtered because of that 5 percent?  I've said it before, and I'll say it again, that is no god that I will ever worship!

When something goes wrong, blame the atheists!  When something goes right, give god all the credit!  This type of thinking is what will cause these very types of problems to get worse and worse.

What we need to do is stop relying on our imaginary friends to solve all our problems for us and start taking a little action.

While this is a tragedy, I have not read or heard one kind thing said about the shooter.  He was obviously a very distrubed person, who just needed love.  And in the wake of this tragedy, all that is said about him is how evil he was.  THIS IS THE PROBLEM!  Our society has responded to this person with anger and hatred, when it should be an out pouring of love on him and his family.  I have no doubt that god-fearing Christians contributed to this tragedy by judging this young man all his life and telling him how puny and unworthy he was.

So while this nation turns to "god" for comfort, I think it is only compounding the problem.

We live in a society that wants to deal with the symptoms of a problem rather than the problem itself.  We would rather respond once a tragedy occurs than take the steps to prevent it by making sure that every child receives the love they deserve.  But this young man was shunned and pushed away by this society until it drove him to commit horrible things.  And while the 27 deaths is tragic and sad, the true tragedy is that we allowed this young man to get to the point where he felt that this was his only course of action.  He did it to get the attention he so badly needed.

So while our "god" society blames his "godlessness" for what he did, I blame the god-fearing people of this nation for putting it into the hands of "god", which is to say they ignored the problem and did nothing!

It has been said that the person who needs love the most, deserves it the least.

So I predict that we will see more and more of this type of thing happen, because the people of this country just want to point fingers at someone else.  They want to cry over how sad it all is, point fingers at the ones who don't believe in their imaginary friend, and then turn around and let it happen again and again!

The part that truly stumps me is how they all turn to god for comfort when this type of thing happens, when god allowed it to happen.  Their all-powerful god could have stopped this deranged killer.  God did nothing to prevent it, and yet they praise him all the more for his goodness and mercy.  I don't see a merciful god... I see a society living in a delusion that their invisible god gives a damn.

I see a whole society of delusional people plugged into a hypothetical matrix, living in a dream world where all good that happens was made by god, and all the bad that happens was made by those who don't believe in him.

The true tragedy is this delusion.  This dream world.  These kinds of problems will stop once we collectively unplug ourselves from it and start taking accountibility for our own actions.  Oh, and giving out a little bit of love instead of judging everyone who isn't just like us.

I saw a video Huckabee did on his show or a show or whatever, and he said something along these lines as well, that we've taken God out of schools and stuff like this happens. MAKES ME ILL. If this "god" really does exist he's an ass for letting 27 people get killed to prove his point- but wait... isn't that what he ALWAYS does? Kills the innocent to prove a point?

I'm still so emotional over this tragedy... what a horrible horrible horrible thing.

I don't believe that it is the fault of unbelievers that this happened. How could they as a group have caused it? But in response to this post, I say: Sin is the cause of it. Satan is trying to take over the world. And it's a horrible thing. But we are nothing. We are the creation; God is the Creator. We are not worthy to question Him. We will, yes, of course we will. One thing that makes me sad is that many of you who don't believe in God think we Christians are evil and that God is horrible and exists to torment us. Christians partially deserve this identity, as we've become judgmental and WE treat God and religion as boring and something not to be excited about. But it is the world who's given God the name of Horror, not God Himself. He made us; we can't make Him. The Bible says we love Him because He first loved us. It also says He so loved us that He sent His Son Jesus to die for us, so that if we believe, if we confess with our mouth that He is Lord, we could be saved from the Hell created for Satan and his angels (no, Hell was not made for us), and we would spend eternity in the Heaven that this earth was supposed to be like. And, Author, if you choose to delete this comment, I know why! I just ask that you read it in full before you do.

Hannah, I don't delete comments unless they are spam. And I don't believe that all Christians are evil. Good and bad people exist in all groups.

Your comment makes no more sense to me than if you were trying to convice me that Peter Pan was the creator. What if I came to you saying that Peter Pan created us becaues I have a story book that says so. Would that convince you? And what if I said that Captain Hook was the cause of all the evil in the world? Would that convince you? But it doesn't matter if you believe in Peter Pan or not because he is real and he will save us from Captian Hook. And if you're not on the winning side then you will get fed to the crocodile when Peter Pan returns! And who are you to question Peter Pan???

Sounds stupid, huh? They are both (god and Peter Pan) just stories and neither has any truth. I hope that someday we can live in a world that is free from the mind prison that is religion.

I don't understand saying how the godless have caused this. Religion has killed more people in the last 2,000 years than "unbelievers".

Something I would like to know is how we could ever have ourselves invented a God such as the Christians have. That, and how in the world this world came into being if God (or, if you'd rather, Peter Pan) did not create it. Do you not think there was Something behind it? Also, I would be interested to know why you quit the Mormon religion.

Amen, Kattie.

Hannah, if you would really like to know the answer to your question, then read a book. I'm not going to sit here and explain it all to you because it will mean so much more to you if you find it yourself. So grab a book and read about the history of the universe. Or just turn on Nova or some other program. If you care to educate yourself about the facts, you will find that the universe could easily exist without a "god" being responsible.

How could we invent a god as awesome as the Christian god? Is that's what you're asking? Go to the library and get a book about mythology.

Be careful though. Seeking answers to these types of questions has been clinically shown to be hazardous to your faith.

And the reason why I left Mormonism is because it's not true. It's a cult.

My journey of leaving Mormonism is documented throughout this blog. I really don't have time or desire to type it all out again.

Nicely done Mr. 411. Well thought out and concise. I would like to add a thought that Steve Martin shared regarding belief, these answers are great for when someone gives you the old "Atheists don't believe in anything" speech.

Steve Martin:

I believe in rainbows and puppy dogs and fairy tales.

And I believe in the family - Mom and Dad and Grandma.. and Uncle Tom, who waves his penis.

And I believe 8 of the 10 Commandments.

And I believe in going to church every Sunday, unless there is a game on.

And I believe that sex is one of the most beautiful, wholesome and natural things.. that money can buy.

And I believe it's derogatory to refer to a woman's breasts as "boobs", "jugs", "winnebagos" or "golden bozos".. and that you should only refer to them as "hooters".

And I believe you should put a woman on a pedestal.. high enough so you can look up her dress.

And I believe in equality, equality for everyone.. no matter how stupid they are, or how much better I am than they are.

And, people say I'm crazy for believing this, but I believe that robots are stealing my luggage.

And I believe I made a mistake when I bought a 30-story 1-bedroom apartment.

And I believe the Battle of the Network Stars should be fought with guns.

And I believe that Ronald Reagan can make this country what it once was - an arctic region covered with ice.

And, lastly, I believe that of all the evils on this earth, there is nothing worse than the music you're listening to right now. That's what I believe.

Jed,

Ironic, isn't it? That all of the people mentioned in that picture were all motivated by religion (or at least religious) and the non-believers get all the blame for their crimes!
