One of these tactics is to put a list on his side bar of ex-Mormons and list their crimes, trying to make it appear as if everyone who leaves the church suddenly becomes a raging criminal. I called him out on this and he accused me of "talking smack".

Disclaimer: By posting this I am not trying to suggest in any way that ALL Mormons are criminals. The people shown here represent an overwhelming minority. Most Mormons are good, law abiding people.

So you feel dumb about saying that the NHM stone was written in "ROMAN letters" and this is the way you handle it? Lame. How many of them were active members in the church when they were arrested?
No I don't feel dumb because last time I looked N and H and M are all in the roman alphabet.
I have no idea how many of them were active.
http://www.omniglot.com/writing/southarabian.htm
It was not written in Roman letters it was written in South Arabian script.
If that is the case, then I stand corrected. However, if it was in South Arabian script (which one would expect seeing as how the area in question is the South Arabian Peninsula) it didn't actually say NHM, then, but what would have been the equivalent in that dialect. I wonder how it is pronounced in the language it was written?
Please keep in mind that the following quote is from a pro-Mormon page located at: http://www.jefflindsay.com/bme15.shtml
"The evidence for the place Nahom included a map from Yemen listing "Nehhem" as an ancient burial site..."
This quote suggests that a map exists somewhere listing the ancient area known as Nehhem. It is possible that Joseph Smith could have had access to this map. Unfortunately, the author of this quote does not elaborate much about this map or where it can be found.
It makes sense to me that IF Joseph Smith was going to write the Book of Mormon and pass it off as non-fiction, then he would have done as much research as possible to be accurate with regard to actual places.
Old world geography is more well preserved than new world geography. What I mean by that is this: Is it possible to find a map of 600 B.C. Arabia? Yes. Is it possible to find a map of 600 B.C. South America? No.
This stone discovery suggests two possibilities: 1) The Book of Mormon is an actual account of the journey of Lehi and his family, or 2) Joseph Smith had access to a map of ancient Arabia.
I believe the second option to be the most likely. Until evidence starts showing up in the new world, where the 600 B.C. geography is far less known, I'm still not convinced.
For example, if archeologists ever discover evidence that there actually was an ancient city somewhere in South America named Zarahemla, then that would be impressive. But no such evidence has ever been found.
Never was a Mormon, not an athiest either, jsut your run of the mill Baptist that doesn't drink, (anymore). I understand that people of all faiths have committed terrible crimes and even understand why you would post this.
You have some very interesting reading here, just wondering if you were an actual athiest though. Where as all faiths have had speedbumps, see Catholic and Islam as examples, just because you have decided one isn't right for you doesn't mean there isn't one faith that can be.
Actual atheist here. Naturally I haven't checked out every religion to see if it jives with me. The idea of taking something on blind faith is just too absurd to my very logical mind. Why believe something that has no evidence at all? Why believe the Bible when it contradicts itself and describes a god who is very violent? To be fair, I can't say that I know for a fact that there is no god. I can't prove that there isn't anymore than you can prove that there is. I am 100% sure, however, that the god of the Bible is not real.
