The Insignificant Mormon Church

In writing my last post about Greg and SPAM and all that nonsense, it really got me thinking about how insignificant Mormonism really is.

It has taken 180 years for the LDS church to gain 14 million members, of which only 4 million are active.

The Humane Society has taken roughly 50 years to gain 10 million members.

If the speed of growth is an indication of truth, then the Humane Society is more true than the LDS church.

If there really are 14 million current Mormons, then the percentage of the earth's population that is Mormon is 0.00002%. (There are 7 billion people on the planet)

You've got a damn long way to go before you "fill the entire world".

Everyone inside the Mormon bubble is so proud that they have all the truth. But well over 99% of the earths population have never even heard of Joseph Smith.

Since the light bulb was invented in 1879, it has spread across the world and has influenced nearly every living person. Thomas Edison has had far more of an impact on the world than Joseph Smith could ever dream of. It has only been 131 years since the light bulb was invented.

Mormonism is insignificant. They take themselves so seriously but the rest of the world just laughs at them. They are a relatively small group of very arrogant people with a persecution complex.

Over 99% of the worlds population couldn't give a shit less about the church at all.

But even though they are small and insignificant, their lies must be exposed.

American Indian tribes often measured their own greatness by the ferocity of their enemies.

The level of opposition that you and others devote to the destruction of Mormonism testifies that it is, at least among yourselves, that Mormonism IS significant. Otherwise, why all the fuss?

Kabir, a Sufi poet, wrote the following verses 600 years ago. Somehow, it seems appropriate here:

"We sense that there is some sort of spirit

That loves birds and animals and the ants;

Perhaps the same one who gave a radiance to you

In your mother's womb.

Is it logical you would be walking around

Entirely orphaned now?

The truth is you turned away yourself,

And decided to go into the dark alone.

Now you are tangled up in others,

And have forgotten what you once knew.

And that's why everything you do

Has some strange failure in it."

Farewell, 411. We've simply moved on for now. But we are not gone. The work of God continues forward and we're moving with it.

Sincerely,

Greg West

Hello Greg,

Of all people, I expected a comment least from you.

You know, it's almost too bad that you're leaving. While I strongly disagree with your methods and "tactics" I have to admit that I respect you. I respect that you have boldly defended what you believe.

I almost regret that we couldn't be "friends". Let me ask you this in all sincerety: Do you honestly believe that ALL who leave the church are evil, bitter, and angry?

If you sincerely do, then we've got nothing left to go on. If you believe that a respectful dialog CAN take place between TBM and apostate, perhaps someday it will.

Many people, including yourself, accuse me of trying to tear down their faith. That's not what I am trying to do. I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything. I'm simply trying to help people understand why.

If, in the future, we do engage in a debate, my purpose will not be to convince you that I am right. It will simply be to inform you of WHY I have taken the path that I have.

All I have expected of all my debate "opponents" is that you have an open mind. You don't have to agree. But I do hope that you would at least try to understand a different paradigm.

That's all I'm trying to do.

Good luck to you, Greg.

Oh, and yes, while the LDS church might be insignificant to the world, it is not insignificant to me. It effects me on a daily basis. It influences my family and friends on a personal level.

It is anything but insignificant to me.

The Mormon Church is not insignificant to me either, I'm a Christian who happens to be best friends with a TBM... Through him, Mormonism has changed my life, for the better! I've been able to look closer at my own faith and that of Mormonism to see which one stands the test (Or that both may be false).

To me, as well as anyone who reads this blog, the LDS Church is anything but insignificant :)

Anyone I talk to about Mormonism is highly interested and I haven't found a person yet who didn't care to know more about it. So even though the world may not know about JS yet, I predict it's just a matter of time before they do.

Thanks 411,

I guess I should clarify a little. The church is significant to those whose lives it effects. But so far, it has effected a very small percentage of the population.

We will have to see what the future of Mormonism holds. Lately, their growth rate has decreased. We estimate that for about as many convert baptisms that they have each year, the same number of people resign. Their main growth is from the inside.

And I wrote a post once showing the increasing number of people who are born in the church who are leaving.

It will be interesting to see what happens.
